United Way Campaign
Together, we can change lives and strengthen communities.
United Way Commits to Focus on Education and Economic Disparity
Together with over 30 community partners (including Yale University), United Way has identified our region’s greatest needs and best opportunities for change. With a commitment to addressing the education and economic disparities that exist in our region, United Way has focused its resources in three community priority areas: Economically Vibrant Communities (Economic Opportunity and Housing); Successful Children and Youth (Success By 6 and School Age Youth); and Healthy and Connected Communities (Health and Civic Engagement).
Did you know…in just the past five years, the cost of housing has increased 45% more than the personal income rate?
In an economically robust community, people are prepared for today’s jobs, can afford safe and decent housing and have access to supports that help families become financially stable. But participating in the region’s economy is difficult for people who struggle with addiction and end up homeless, or people who cannot afford today’s housing prices and live in substandard, overcrowded housing. And it’s next to impossible for teens who drop out of school or individuals coming out of the criminal justice system - who lack basic literacy and job skills – to compete in a modern economy. United Way works with government, nonprofit and corporate partners to ensure that more people have the skills to secure and maintain employment and safe, affordable housing – not only because it improves the lives of these people, but because it strengthens our entire region.

Did you know… economically disadvantaged children enter kindergarten 1-2 years behind in language and other skills important to school success?
All of our children deserve to have opportunities to develop, grow and learn so that they become well-rounded individuals and future community leaders. We know that children’s experiences during their early years lay the foundation for future success. Right now, too many of our children do not have that foundation. And as children get older, they need good schools as well as safe opportunities to play, learn and excel outside of school. United Way is working to provide children, their parents and caregivers the tools, supports and opportunities they need to be successful in school and beyond.

Did you know… one in thirteen Connecticut residents doesn’t see a doctor because they cannot afford the cost of the visit?
Healthy, active people of all ages bring vitality to a community. United Way invests in programs that help people achieve and maintain good physical and mental health, such as preventive health services for pregnant women, individuals at risk for diabetes and people living with mental illness. Creating a healthy community requires more than just healthy individuals, however. It also requires genuine connections among residents, neighborhoods and towns.
